Dangerous To Know & Love by Jane Harvey-Berrick

Silence is only skin deep.

Nineteen year old Daniel Colton is the guy all the girls want to date, and the man all the guys want to be. Moody, with an explosive temper, closed off and sullen, he’s also beautiful, tatted in delicious ways, with a pierced eyebrow and spiky black hair. It’s rumored he has piercings in other places, too. Is he really mad, bad and dangerous to know?

Daniel lives with his older brother, Zef, and their home is party central. You want drugs, a good time, liquor, no questions asked? Colton’s is the place to go.

When Daniel and good girl Lisanne Maclaine have to work together on an assignment, Lisanne finds there’s a lot more to the college’s bad boy than his reputation. He’s intelligent and funny and good company. And then she discovers his secret, why he’s so closed off to everyone, and determined to keep people at arms’ length. But being his secret-keeper is harder than she ever dreamed.

Oh my sweet Mary!  I don't even know where to start.  To say this book is amazing wouldn't be doing it justice.  Hands down one of the BEST books I have ever read and I am not into YA at all!  I was looking forward to this book.  A lot of people didn't finish it but the others had great things to say.  I thought yeah...I'm gonna read it.  It was the right decision.  The writing style was amazing.  The characters...OH WOW.  Especially Daniel, I love him!  Such a great story.  It touched on a very hard subject that isn't talked about often.  The author is brilliant.  My hat is off to you ma'me!  I absolutely couldn't put this one down.  I'm talking straight reading until 3 this morning and then back up early reading until about an hour ago.  I got nothing done today and I don't regret a minute of it :)

Daniel is our hero.  He's dark and mysterious, always keeping to himself.  He doesn't make friends, gets into fights often, is the brother of the town's "go to" guy.  He's tattooed, pierced, built in a way that would make your mama blush, has jet black, spiked hair, curses like a sailor and drives a Harley.  He's very intense.  When he falls for someone, he falls hard.  He's been through a huge tragedy, has a horrible home life and is hiding a HUGE secret.  He's a possessive Alpha male but also in desperate need of being loved.  There is no way you can't fall in love with this man.  He reminds me of Travis in Beautiful Disaster because of his intensity with Lis and the constant fighting and brooding.

Lisanne (Lis) is our heroine.  I have no idea how to pronounce her name.  She beautiful and doesn't realize it.  She lives on campus with her roommate.  She's a little on the immature side, also on the nerdy side.  She's a wallflower really.  She's a singer in a band, and a music major.  She can get very jealous but she's great at handling Daniel and his issues.  There were times where she just couldn't stop sticking her foot in her mouth and there were times where she would just go off on him for no reason forgetting that he had done everything he was dealing with for her.  It took her awhile to grow on me but I loved her to at the end of the book.

So they meet in a business class on campus.  They are anything but friend, even having nicknames for each other that aren't really nice.  She called him "eye brow ring guy" in the beginning.  Naturally they are paired to work together on an assignment and they get to know each other.

On the account of time, I'm gonna skip a bunch of the smaller stuff because this book is really long.

**Huge Spoiler Ahead**

So here's the big secret.  Daniel is deaf.  He doesn't want anyone to know and he lives his life as if he's never been without his hearing.  He began loosing it at 14 and by 17 it was gone.  He was a musician and now that's gone.  His parents were killed in a car accident when he was 17 also.  He lives with his brother who is a real piece of work.  He can't stand Lis and he's got 50 druggies living in the house never really caring that Daniel will get into trouble if he ever gets busted.  The explains a lot about why he is the way he is.  People view him as cold and unfriendly.  They don't realize that unless they are standing face to face with him he can't read their lips.

Once Lis finds out his secret and promises him she will never tell, she starts to open his eyes to a life he's missing.  He likes her and she likes him but they are very reluctant in the beginning to start anything. After a great day together, they end up at his house and one thing leads to another.  The officially start dating not long after.  She is the first girlfriend he has ever had, she's the first person he's ever really let into his life.  He screws things up with her a lot but she's resilient and she handles him better than anyone.  They are perfect together.  For awhile you don't really know where they stand but it becomes pretty clear.

After spending a very awkward Thanksgiving with her parents (her parents caught them pretty much in bed together) he leaves and things change.  He becomes distant and she thinks she's loosing him.  He won't talk to her and they aren't spending time together.  It goes on for 3 weeks when she's finally had enough.  She finds out he's texting an ex girlfriend (completely not what she thinks, he's totally innocent) and flips out.  She breaks up with him and kicks him out.  They don't speak at all until she gets a letter from him in which he explains everything and it floors her.  Turns out he decided to have something done about his hearing that he had refused earlier.  He's doing it for her but for himself too.

Everything has changed since I met you. I thought I knew who I was, what I was, but being with you, I've learned about the kind of man I want to be...I don’t have anything to lose but if I can hear you sing, if I can hear your voice, that’ll be enough.

She ends up at the hospital the night of the procedure and they make up.  He spends Christmas with her family and leaves early planning to find a place to live without his brother.  He want a place for them, so they can just be together.  She isn't moving in with him but they both already consider it their place.  When he gets home to find a place, everything falls apart.  He's about to unlock his door when the cops show up.  He's arrested and spends 2 days in jail.  She can't find him and comes running back to school, scared out of her mind.  His house has been destroyed and there is nothing left.  Her parents and her friends come to the rescue and they spend the rest of Christmas break repairing the house to livable status.

To make a very long story short.  He eventually gets results with his implants so that he can hear her.  They move in together the following year and both have admitted they are head over heels for each other.

It's a great story.  I thought is was really really long but at 97% I was ready to read another 2 days about them.  I didn't want it to be over.  This book is going to stay with me for a long time.  It will not be easily forgotten.  I recommend this book to everyone.  Read it!  You will not be disappointed!

Meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to me.

He raised his hands and sent the message that meant so much to both of them. The soundless words that expressed the road they had traveled together. I hear you, he said with his hands. I hear you.

“It’s like doing one of those dumb math problems: three people are driving at 20mph in a car carrying two gallons of gas and a horse doing yoga, when a car traveling at 30mph with two clowns drinking cola collides, what time is it in Tokyo? It doesn’t make any sense and the only answer I ever come up with is who cares!”
