Skin Deep by J.M. Stone

** 3.5 out of 5 Stars **

Oh, who was she kidding? Emma knew that going to the tattoo shop with her best friend, Allie, would result in getting badgered until she ended up with some sort of needle piercing her flesh in one way or another. What she didn’t plan on was ending up face-first on the floor of the shop with a busted lip. Or doing it in front of the hottest guy she’d seen since…well, ever.

Mortified, Emma never thought she’d ever step foot back in Skin Deep again. But fate, with a little help from Emma’s flighty best friend and a chance encounter with a fudge bar, steps in. Now Emma’s torn between taking a chance on getting her heart broken by the enigmatic, gorgeous Lucas, and playing it safe with good ol’ trusty B.O.B.

Lucas lets Emma know that he gets what he wants, and what he wants is her. When Emma gives in and quits pushing him away, she’s surprised at how quickly the walls around her heart crumble. She’s even more surprised that her unconventional, zany family just endears her even more to him.

But no one knows there’s someone that wants her more, and they’ll stop at nothing to get her.

This book is ok, it’s not great and it’s not horrible.  Luke, Brandon and Jackson make this book.  Emma got on my nerves a lot.  She acted like a 16 yr old half the time.  It’s hard for me to even like her.  The writing style wasn’t really for me.  This book didn’t have a whole lot of depth about it either.  It’s longer than it needs to be.  There was a ton of fill in it.  I mean what was with all the descriptions.  I honestly didn’t need to know every detail about what her and her friends wore out, or exactly what the Halloween party looked like down to the tablecloths.  There was just too much detail on some things and not enough on others.  The last thing I didn’t like about it was the ! marks.  They were everywhere and most of them used in the wrong places.  It was like she was yelling throughout the whole book.

Emma is in her 20's and works for a law office.  She is very on the immature side and has issues with food.  She's a size 12 and not a size 2 so apparently that's where the issues come from.  She's curvy and beautiful but I have a hard time picturing her over the age of 16 because of the way she act.

Luke is tall, gorgeous, tattooed and has hip lip pierced.  He's dominate in the bedroom.  He's also controlling, possessive, and fiercely protective of Emma.  I loved him.

Emma and her best friend Allie go into Luke and Brandon’s tattoo parlor.  Emma wants a tattoo but she’s scared.  For the record, they don’t hurt that bad ;)  She somehow manages to face plant in the process of walking to the counter.  I imagine it had something to do with how sexy Luke is.  She busts her lip and he takes her back to fix her up then gives her the tattoo she wants.  She thinks it’s the last time she’ll see him.  As things go it won’t be.   She ends up having to take Allie back to the tattoo shop because she ripped her tongue (she just had it pierced) on a fudge Popsicle.  Yeah, that’s funny; I don’t care how you look at it.  After Emma and Brandon have a blast at Allie’s expense she somehow manages to back up into Luke.    As they are leaving, he grabs her and pretty much tells her she is going to dinner with him.  He doesn’t ask, just tells her.

He takes her to dinner.  Here is where I begin having problems.  Emma has issues with food.  She is a size 12.  Once again…there is nothing wrong with being a size 12.  I’m a size 12.  I don’t stuff food in my mouth to the point of being gross.  I don’t horde food from my husband.  I’m not obsessed with it either.  The way the author described this dinner and the way she acted almost caused me to stop reading this book.  It was just tasteless and disrespectful.

“My brother tried to steal a piece of chicken from my fettuccini alfredo one night at dinner. Note the key word, tried. Didn’t work, ‘cause I bit him.” (SERIOUSLY!!!)

“Want to try a bite?” I asked him, hoping that he’d say no. What? I told you I was greedy with my Manny’s…

See what I mean!  It’s just ridiculous!  Anyway, dinner goes well even though she made a fool out of herself with how much she ate.  She thinks she’s ruined it but he’s really just turned on big time.  They go back to her place and start messing around but then her brother shows up with her very drunk sister.

He calls her a week later and once again tells her she’s going out with him.  She says no, and he pretty much tells her it’s not up for negotiation.  She thinks she’s blown him off but when he shows up it surprises her.  I’m not sure why…he told her he was coming to get her.  They stay in since she isn’t dressed.  While watching TV, things get hot and heavy and they pick up where the left off in the bedroom.  He’s very pushy and controlling during sex but the scenes are hot.

She tries to break it off with him but he’s not letting her get away with that.  After he pretty much kidnaps her they go to his house.  He tells her about his childhood but when she asks him to take her home it hurts him and they don’t speak again until she goes after him.  After they make up they are pretty much inseparable.  He wants her in his house and in his bed all the time.  He wants her within arm distance unless she’s at work.  After going back and forth to get clothes, he finally shoves all her stuff into a suitcase and moves her into his house.  Once again, he just took it upon himself to move her in.  No asking necessary in his eyes.  It does cause a fuss and after she flat out tells him no and to leave he tells her she is going to move in with him.  She caves.

“I’m not trying to be an overbearing ass, sugar. I…if you don’t want to move in to my house, that’s fine. I’ll move in here with you. But we’re gonna live together no matter what, because I don’t want to be apart from you.”

Enter Jackson, who I freakin love by the way.  He’s hot, sexy and best friend to Luke.  They have done everything together over the years including sharing woman ;) He has no intention of sharing Emma but he does let Jackson watch them.  It’s a hot, hot sex scene.

Emma has a bit of a problem where she works.  She’s been getting strange phone calls.  It started with just the freaky breathing and now the guy is talking.  She has a stalker but doesn’t feel the need to tell Luke about it brushing it off like it isn’t a big deal.

There is a point at about 70% where Emma walks in on Luke with another woman at the tattoo parlor.  It’s not what it looks like, well on his part anyway.  Emma runs off and he has to chase her down.  She’s done with him in that moment.  She ends up at Allie’s house where Luke pretty much storms the place bring the girl with him.  He tries to tell her that it wasn’t what she thought and that he had pushed the girl away telling her he was in love with Emma.  He tells her he loves her.  Sucks that it has to come out at this moment.  She tells him she needs time and he leaves defeated.  It doesn’t take her long to forgive him, probably 15 minutes so she calls Brandon and finds out where he is and then heads home to him.

After everything has smoothed over she slips up and tells Luke about the creepy guy calling her.  He has a meltdown.  I can’t blame him.  She should have told him.  Brandon and Jackson aren’t happy with her either.  It’s funny to watch this because you get to see how close she is with all of them.  I mean she’s got 3 men ready to fight for her if it comes to that.

He proposes on Christmas morning in a very sweet way.  She says yes of course.

After the holiday, she goes back to work and things start getting intense with the creepy guy calling her.  her stalker saw her kissing Luke on New Years.  Luke is worried sick and he has a reason to be.  It turns out the stalker is a guy she was nice to in the office.  He became obsessed with her.  He hits her in the head while she’s getting in her car and kidnaps her.  He takes her to an abandoned house.  She gets her licks in but he beats her into unconsciousness.  She somehow manages to dial 911 before she blacks out.

She wakes up in the hospital with Luke beside her.  He was crazy with worry trying to find her when all this was going on.  They all were.  She has been in a coma for 2 weeks.  They guy almost killed her.  On a positive note she’s got a fianc√© in the room with her and a waiting room full of people waiting for her.  The doctor begins to tell her what happened to her and Luke stands abruptly and has to leave the room.  The guy had stabbed her and beaten her horribly.

“I guess…I just…I wanted you to know that he didn’t give up on you. WE didn’t give up on you. But most especially, the fact that if you didn’t know it already, Luke is head over heels in love with you and he wasn’t letting you go without a fight.”

She ends up working at the tattoo parlor organizing appointments and answering phones instead of taking her job back at the lawyer’s office.  She is still living with Luke and things are going well.  We didn’t get an epilogue and I kind of wanted one.

So this is the 2nd time I have read this book…mainly because I wanted to do a review on it.  It’s not horrible and I would recommend it to some.  If you have issues with grammer or if you don’t like immature girls then this isn’t the book for you but if you like hot tattooed guys then you’ll love it.  I’m giving it 3 ½ stars.  The book lost a full star because of the eating issue.  It just rubbed me the wrong way.

My Luke/Emma

My Brandon and Jackson simply because I loved them
