Defiance by Stephanie Tyler

**4.5 out of 5 Stars**

Rebelling against her legacy as the MC's princess, Tru Tennyson escaped the ruthless, male-dominated culture of the Defiance motorcycle club.  Three years later, her new-found freedom is ripped away, thanks to the massive hybrid storm that killed millions.  Now, in the post-Chaos world of semi-darkness and near-total anarchy where gangs rule, she discovers the dangerous world of Defiance may be the one thing that can keep her safe.

Tru is at the MC's mercy when she's dragged back to her former home...and to the only man she's ever pictured a future with.  Caspar is the bastard son of the club's leader, her safe haven when life got rough--and her onetime lover the night she left.  When Tru refuses to trade sex for power and be claimed by a rival club leader, she also dares to announce she wants Caspar instead, throwing the MC into turmoil.

Tru's brazen revolt could start a gang war and destroy the club from within.  Now both Tru and the MC must wait for Caspar's response...and the inevitable fallout.

MC books are a little new to me, I tend to lean more toward the fighting type of book.  This book made me a believer.  I loved it.  I loved the angst and the drama.  The post-apocalyptic thing was a little new but I enjoyed reading about it.  I loved how the author brought all the elements together.  I connected with the characters and experienced their journey with them.  This book was tough to read at times.  The violence was horrible and there is a lot of death as well.  Over all though it's a page turner and I enjoyed every second of it.  The writing was a little clipped at times.  I will never understand what it is about certain types of hero's not being able to make a complete sentence and it drives me crazy but I overlooked it as much as I could with this one.

Tru is a MC princess who ran away from the MC club 3 years ago.  After "the storm" she has to return to her home for safety.  She's beautiful with long blonde hair, green eyes, tanned skin and a toned body.  She was abused by her father.  She runs when things get tough and she hides but she's also strong when it comes to Caspar.  She's been in love with him since she was 6, even while dating his brother Silas through high school.

Caspar is an enforcer with Defiance.  He's the illegitimate son of the MC's leader Lance.  He has white blonde hair, ice blue eyes and a scar that runs from his mouth to his eye.  He's tattooed and pierced.  He's scary but beautiful.  He is happy to see Tru return but would never admit it.

So before I start the summary there are a few things that need to be explained...

1.  The Storm-multiple natural disaster triggered by several meteors that hit the earth.  Things like volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes and wild weather hit within a week after the meteor.  Storms are brutal and the sun only shines every few weeks for a few hours.  The world is in a state of darkness at all times.  Power is run from a generator and there is no communication.  The world is in a state of chaos and anarchy with the government in ruins.

2.  Bonding-Bonding is the MC's version of marriage.  It's a bylaw that is taken very seriously.  A tattoo is placed on a woman staking claim to her by the man.  It's not always based on love and women are viewed as property to the men.  Breaking this bond can result in death.

Tru and Caspar meet again as she's brought into the club after refusing to bond with a rival MC club's president.  She wouldn't return until after her father's death.  Defiance wants her to bond with Roan so that he can refuse and ask her to be put to death to keep the peace among the rival gang.  She refuses.  She wants Caspar but he refuses to listen because he doesn't want to be her sloppy seconds.  It's obvious from this moment that there's something there.  He wanted her to come to him for help and she didn't so he's angry.  She's locked away and told to say out of sight.

A fight is held every so often and the night of said fight is when Tru decides to make her appearance.  She publicly states in front of the entire MC that she will not bond with Roan and that she wants to bond with Caspar.  This sends the club into chaos.  Caspar has always sort of been her protector.  The club expects him to refuse to keep the peace but only states that he will make his decision in front of the other MC's leader.  We see their first kiss following this and she tells him the bond isn't just about survival.  We also learn that they slept together the night she ran and that he is the reason she was able to escape.  He took her from the compound and put her on a bus even though he wanted her to stay.

The day comes for him to make his choice...bonding day or her funeral.  He snaps the other MC president's neck and in doing so chooses her which is automatic war.  He doesn't actually accept the bond though, he only accepts keeping her within the club.  We see him meeting with the other MC president's brother (who took over) several times.  This becomes a big deal later on.  He can't accept the bond yet because he's battling the fact that he let her go in the first place.  He wants her to want him for the right reasons and he doesn't want her to be a prisoner.  He's holding back because she likes to run when things get tough.  From that moment I saw something else going on with him and I also saw how much he loves her.  I never questioned it after that.  It's obvious he's got something going on under the surface too.

Other things happen where she proves what he means to her and that she's not ashamed of wanting to be with him.  His plan comes out.  He is not actually the son of Lance.  He's also the actual person who should be in control of Defiance.  He's set to take control and make long over due changes.  The men are horrible to the women.  They beat them and rape them and he's out to stop it.  He wants Tru with him while he's making these changes.  All of these things are going on under the surface with a small following behind him.  Mathias and Bishop are his right hand men and I really loved them.  They are former soldiers who aren't even actual member but fight along side the club, they are also very protective of Tru.  With the pot being stirred things can get a little dangerous.  Lance, the club's leader, slaps Tru which causes big problems.  He makes the decision that he's not letting her run anymore and the war begins.

A lot of stuff happens during this time but no major spoilers to give for it.  The only major thing that happens is when cops show up accusing Tru of murdering a cop.  The cop tried to rape her and she killed him.  Caspar tells her he will handle it and he does.

He tells her she's his life and lets her know he's agreed to bond with her without saying the words.  They do have one small fight and then avoid each other for a week because he's afraid she trying to run but she settles the issue and they make up.  He knew she would eventually come back and he's known where she was the entire time.  Right before the war within the MC starts he gives her a chance to leave to keep her safe, telling her it will kill him but he understands.  She refuses, he tells her he loves her and they begin the fight of their lives side by side.  She's kidnapped but completely unharmed.  She's waiting patiently for them to come get her.  Caspar had the other gang leader do it to keep her safe.  They have been working together to bring down Lance's rule.  She comes to stand beside Caspar and they tell the club what has really been going on.  Caspar beats Roan within an inch of his life...literally, like never gonna wake up from the coma he's in.  Silas, Caspar's brother, kills Lance.

The epilogue wrapped everything up perfectly.  Caspar takes over Defiance and begins to change things with her by his side.  She gets her bonding tattoo from him officially linking them together though she's belonged to him since the night he helped her leave.  They are building a house and beginning their life together as the MC president and his wife.

It was a great book if you can get past the dark side of it.  I personally love books like this and it doesn't bother me.  If you're looking for a wild ride then read this book.  It's got a hot biker, a ton of action, and a great love story backing it up.  I give it 4.5 Stars.

Favorite Quotes:

“Not lettin’ you run anymore. Decided that tonight. I let you, you ran. You came back. I was lucky. Not countin’ on luck anymore. You need me to hold you down, I can do that with one arm. And I will. The rest, that’s up to you.”

“No can. Have to. Means your life. Means mine. And, Tru, in case you don’t know it yet, you’re my life. Yeah?”
