Pulse by Gail McHugh

** 5 out of 5 Amazing/Beautiful Stars **

How do you keep existing when your heart is so splintered, so completely torn to shreds, your pulse is fading?

You’re…broken.  How do you move forward when every breath is nothing more than a constant ache?  Living becomes an insidious reminder that you threw away the single largest part of yourself.  Your…soul.  No amount of distraction can pull you from the torture of losing your…life.

Now that Emily Cooper has walked away from her first love, she finds herself running toward her only love.  Unraveling fast, but clinging to hope, Emily risks all she has left on the man that has consumed her every thought and dream since the day they met.  Will Gavin take her back?  And if so, will their reunion be a collision of two hearts destined to complete one another and rekindle a love that knew no boundaries?  Or will scars from their past rip open, tearing slowly at what each of them was meant to be?  Can fate, the ultimate game changer, mend the shattered road it laid out from the start?

Only time will tell…

Wow and I thought Collide was good.  I have no words for this one.  Gail McHugh out did herself on this one!  This book was so good.  I loved getting to see Gavin and Emily building their relationship finally.  To be honest, I couldn't really see what this book would be about.  I didn't know where it would go and I wondered if it could hold my attention.  I grabbed it and held it like a vice grip and wouldn't let go.  I got 2 hours of sleep last night.  Amazing, Amazing book!

One Word...Gavin!  Oh that man!  He takes book boyfriend to an entirely different level!  This man is perfection at it's finest!  His love for Emily is insane.  He'd kill for her, he'd die for her, he'd go to hell and back for her.  He's so concerned with her well being.  Without getting into it just yet, lets just say that he does something in this book that not many men can do.  He proves to her just how much he really does love eternity and back!

Pulse picks up exactly where Collide finished.  She's on her way to Gavin's penthouse to beg forgiveness only to find out he's not home.  He boards a plane and takes off to Mexico do drink away his pain.  She goes home and wakes up the next morning to a very angry Dillon.  When she tells him it's over and she's not marrying him he goes off the rails.  He knocks her around repeatedly until her sister and brother-in-law show up and then he and the brother-in-law fight once he pulls him off her.  Dillon is arrested and a restraining order is put in place.

It's been a week and a half and no one has heard from Gavin.  He's not answering his phone or checking his messages.  Emily has left him tons but he's still not answering.  She's had enough and she goes to Colton, Gavin's brother, and finds out where he is and then she takes off to Mexico.  Things don't go well at first.  She shows up and he has two "void fillers" with him.  He sends them away and he and Emily end up fighting on the roadside before he takes her back to her hotel and leaves her.

“You’re going to kill us.”
“I’m already dead,”

She packs and leaves her room only to see Gavin getting off the elevator.  They end up in her room and he tells her that he was always coming back.  She doesn't tell him about Dillon though she needs too.  They spend an amazing night together and things begin to head in the right direction.  On the same stretch of road as the day before, they make amends cementing their future together.

“I love you,” Gavin whispered, “I want to break the rules with you. Kiss you passionately every day. Make you smile when you’re about to cry. I want no regrets with us. I want us to laugh together until we can’t breathe and it hurts. No man will ever love you the way I’m going to love you, Emily. You’re it. My last. My forever.”

Back in NYC she moves in with him.  She's forced to tell him about Dillon and he looses it nearly killing the guy in his office the next day.  Emily didn't want him to go after him but he had too.  Once again, trying to protect the woman he loves and trying to get vengeance and push away guilt for leaving her to deal with it on her own.  To his benefit though, he did think she married Dillon and he'd lost his whole life.  He destroyed his phone before he left and had no idea that she wasn't married.

While in California for Christmas, she gets a big surprise.  She's pregnant.  The problem with this is she has no way of knowing which man fathered the baby.  Gavin's reaction is amazing.  Not a lot of men can deal with raising another man's child.  He had to get out at first but he never actually left her.  When she finds him he tells her he's not leaving her.  He loves her and they will get through it.  See a perfect man.

“Standing here before you tonight, I give you my word as a man, as your friend, and as your lover, if this baby isn't mine, I’ll love it no less than I do the angel carrying it."

There won't be a happy ending anytime soon.  They try to keep the pregnancy from Dillon.  Gavin is having a hard time with the fact that the baby may not be his but he's hiding it well until Dillon makes his demands.  This guy just wants to see the two of them suffer.  He doesn't care about the baby and wants nothing to do with it, he just wants to make them uncomfortable.  To keep Gavin out of jail for nearly killing Dillon, they have to make a deal.  Dillon can come to all the doctors appointments but no to the delivery room.  It works out without them killing each other but they make it known they don't want Dillon there.  They do a partenity test and don't let Dillon know they've done it.  After all the worrying and the stress and even though the odds weren't in Gavin's favor...the baby is Gavin's!

HERE'S THE PART WHERE I GET MAD/INFURIATED/ANGRY/ALMOST VIOLENT!  Prepare yourselves!  Here is my reaction to the following little nugget.

The morning after Gavin finds out that his son is actually his he leaves the house to get milk and doesn't return.  He has a wreck on his motorcycle and has to be airlifted and rushed into surgery.  They don't know if he's going to make it and it doesn't look good.  While Emily is holding his hand begging him to fight for her and for their unborn child, Gavin codes.  He can't be revived and he dies.  Yep he dies, leaving behind his girlfriend and unborn son.  Are you mad?  I am!  I wasn't expecting this at all and I screamed at my Kindle at 2 am and woke my very confused husband up.

So now what?  Gavin has died and Emily is alone except she's really not.  IT WAS ALL A STINKING DREAM!  Seriously?!  Give me a heart attack for no reason why don't ya ;)  She wakes up to Gavin shaking her and trying to calm her down.  She can't believe he's alive so she's hysterical while he's trying to get her to breath.  She's also in labor.

They get to the hospital with an officially nervous and scared-of-his-girlfriend Gavin.  After an emergency c-section Noah Alexander Blake is introduced to the world and to very happy and adoring parents.  Dillon doesn't know she has had the baby.  Since the question of paternity is no longer an issue dealing with him is on the back burner.  When he does tell him he just hands him the birth announcement from a week prior and when Dillon starts to leave his office to go see "his baby" Gavin hands him the paternity results and walks out the door.  That chapter of their lives is officially closed.

7 months later Gavin proposes and takes her to the house he's built for them.  His game of 20 questions he played with her throughout the book was all a way to build the house with the things she liked without her knowing it.  Stone or Granite?  Crown or regular molding?  You get the idea.

In the epilogue a year later it's Gavin's birthday.  She gives him his gift...a minivan.  It's an own going thing with them that he wants a minivan to fill a bucket load of kids with.  Inside the minivan is an extra car seat and he realizes that's she's telling him she's pregnant with their second child.

From beautiful do-overs on a long stretch of highway in Mexico, to many layers of life peeled away, filled with bottle caps and another car seat in the back of a minivan, time had tick-tocked its way to where it belonged.

Perfect Perfect book!  I loved every second of it.  The only thing I didn't like was that dream!  It was pointless, it got me all worked up and then it was like oh well that never happened.  I kept reading though (like I could have put it down anyway) and everything worked out.  They finally got their happy ending.  I give it 5 stars though it deserves many many more.  Great job, Gail McHugh!

My Gavin/Emily...again
