Unbeautifully by Madeline Sheehan

** 5 out of 5 Stars**

Warning:  This is not a story about fate or destiny.  This is a story about pain, sorrow, and suffering.  This is an impulsive whirlwind romance between two lovers that are not meant to be together.  Theirs is not a world with sunshine and roses.  Instead, their love blossoms in a secret world full of crime, violence and death.  Their story is about what can be born from nightmares.

Danielle "Danny" West is the daughter of Deuce West, President of the Hell's Horsemen Motorcycle Club.  A sweet and beautiful girl, she loses her way, searching for things that are always out of her reach.

Erik "Ripper" Jacobs is the Sergeant of Arms in the Hell's Horsemen.  Once a man who always had a smile on his face, his life takes a turn for the worst when a tragedy befalls him, leaving him scarred and broken.  During a midsummer night, Danny and Ripper's paths cross, forever changing their lives.  Hastily, their lust turns to love until another tragedy forces them apart.  On a journey that is marred with ugliness and chaos, Danny and Ripper must discover if their unforeseen connection can find the beauty in their world.

This is Danny and Ripper's story.

Everything has beauty.  Even the ugly.  Especially the ugly.  Because without ugly, there would be no beauty.

This was a great book.  It wasn't as good as Undeniable but it was still an amazing book.  The author continued with the amazing writing style.  We got to meet a few new characters as well as continuing falling in love with the old ones.  For me this book may as well have been the sequel to Deuce and Eva's story.  They overshadowed Ripper and Danny.  I don't know if it was because I absolutely love Deuce and Eva or because there were to many things about them.  We got to see how they came to be in the epilogue from Undeniable.  The book shows their struggle to overcome the things that happened to Eva.  To be honest once I realized how much they were in this book I kept reading it to see the rest of their story and I really didn't care that much about Ripper and Danny.  Their story was a good story though.  Danny is Deuce's oldest daughter.  Ripper is Deuce's right hand man.  Their love is forbidden but once again the author brings the story together beautifully.  The book hooked me and I couldn't put it down.  I was sad that it was over when I was finished reading but I was really happy with it.

Ripper is the Sergeant of Arms with Hell's Horsemen.  He was badly scarred when Eva's ex husband tortured him in the previous book.  He has scars on his face and chest.  He is missing his right eye and wears a glass one.  He's not just scarred on the outside though, he's scarred on the inside as well.  He's a shell of the man he once was.  He's broken  and destroyed.  He's got blonde hair and blue eyes.  His scars don't take away from how beautiful he is though.

Danny is Deuce's oldest daughter.  She's been raised with the MC lifestyle.  Her father has done his best to keep her from that world but it's not meant to be.  She beautiful, tall, long blonde hair, blue eyes with the body of a gymnast.

Ours was the furthest thing from a picture-perfect romance; it was more of a car crash, a metal-bending, blood-splattered disaster that left no survivors, only bad memories and heartache.

Unbeautifully picks up right where the epilogue of Undeniable left off.  They are at a barbecue for the MC.  She is with her boyfriend ZZ and Ripper is all over Anabeth, Danny's friend.  You know from the first look that there is a past between them.  These two are crazy about each other but not together and you want to know why.  They have this weird mind thing going on where they can have a full conversation between them without saying a word.  ZZ pulls her into the middle of the barbecue and proposes.  Before she has a chance to answer Ripper decides he doesn't care about club codes and dishonor, he's not willing to let go of her forever so he calls her name and starts toward her...

3 years earlier...

It's Danny's prom night and she's hating every minute of it.  She used to be a carefree teen who loved life but after everything that has happened she's over all of it.  The state of the relationship between Eva and Deuce has taken its toll on the entire family.

This song is perfect for the state Eva and Deuce are in...(I do not own this video)

Eva doesn't talk, doesn't get out of bed, etc.  Deuce is taking it even worse.  He spends hours sitting on the floor next to her bed staring at nothing or punching walls.  He can't have sex with her because every time he begins he sees Frankie as he rapes her.  He's angry with her because of her body's reaction to the rape.  I mean come on it's not her fault.  Frankie was married to her for years, he wasn't violent with her while he raped her and her body enjoyed it. That doesn't mean she enjoyed it. They fight constantly.  He accuses her of enjoying it.  She begs him to let her fix things but he's not going to let her.  He accuses her of loving Frankie more than him.  He wants to walk away from everything.  Eventually Deuce stops coming home all together and things progressively have gotten worse.  The strange thing is that eventually Eva comes out of her depression and then she waits patiently for Deuce to come back to her.  Danny and her brother are having to run things at home.  She's had to give up everything and she's resentful.  Ripper is sent to pick Danny up from prom and he takes her for a ride to the park.  They spend the night drinking and getting high.  Ripper is 14 years older than Danny...she's 18 and he's 32.  They end up sleeping together and then he regrets it because he knows he's dead if Deuce finds out.

Ripper and Danny spend their time avoiding eye contact and not talking at all.  They both want each other and they are falling hard for each other but it's forbidden.  The MC goes on lock down after some things go down and Ripper is sent to get Danny.  They end up fighting about that night.  They eventually calm down and decide that they want to be together.  Hello full blown secret relationship.  She won't be with anyone else and neither will he.  They spend the lock down sneaking into different places to have sex.  It's during this time he realizes he's in love with her.  While the club is in lock down Deuce is in NYC with Eva's dad on business.  Her dad gives it to him straight.  He tells him to go home and fix his family, to reclaim his girl.  He also tells him to quit thinking about running because if he continues the path he's own Preacher is coming for his daughter and grand-daughter and bringing them home.  He tries to have sex with one of the groupies at her dad's MC but can't go through with it.  He doesn't want anyone but her.  He goes home.  While all of this is going on Eva has decided she's had enough.  She's better and she's moved on from what has happened to them while watching Deuce self destruct.  She's done and she's leaving.  This all changes when she realizes what is going on with Danny and Ripper.  She's staying but only until she's sure her family will survive without her.

Lock down is over and Danny and Ripper spend a week at his apartment.  It's perfect for the most part.  They have one fight about telling her father.  She packs her bags and tells him she's leaving.  He has other ideas and throws her over his shoulder and takes her upstairs to remind her why they are so good together.  While they are away on their little vacation enjoying each other...

Deuce comes home and has a talk with the oldest member of his MC.  He tells him she will leave him this time and he won't get her back.  He decides (finally) that he isn't going to loose her because he can't live without her.  He calls her and tells her to go home and he's meeting her there.  Once in the house they end up in the shower together.  He tells her about the groupie and she's goes ballistic.  When she tells him they were doomed from the beginning he tells her why he came home to meet her.  He came home to start fixing things between them and that's exactly what he plans on doing...starting right then.  He tells her that she isn't leaving him and promises her that things are going to get better.  They start to have sex but he can't do it and she begs and tells him he's her reason for being and finally he pushes through his issues and makes love to her re-establishing that connection between them.  He proposes to her and she says yes.

The following morning Deuce calls Danny and tells her he wants to see her and apologizes for the last few months.  He tells her that Eva is home with him and that he proposed.  While making breakfast,  Nikki, the club whore that Ripper sees regularly or did until Danny shows up with a gun.  She's angry that Ripper has chosen Danny and shots him.  Danny ends up killing Nikki.  The only way he knows to protect Danny from the hell that follows him is to leave the MC.  He talks to Deuce and he tells him to take the time he needs and then get back where he belongs, that he's family and his patch will be waiting on him when he's ready.  He takes off without telling Danny.  She finds out the following morning and is crushed.

Ripper is drinking his sorrows away and sleeping with anything female he comes in contact with as he passes though cities.  Danny finds out she's pregnant and has an abortion.  She doesn't tell Ripper.  I had a hard time reading that scene.  It's a little on the detailed side and I am VERY pro-life.  She leaves the clinic and realizes her brother is there.  He's angry but would never have let her go though it alone.  He tells her she should have told him and then he takes care of her.  She literally goes off the deep end as time passes.  She doesn't eat or sleep.  She doesn't shower for days at a time.  She starts smoking, drinking and getting high.  She's angry all the time.  Deuce is worried and confronts her.  Cage gets involved defending his sister.  Eva has to quickly intervene with the help of Deuce's boys when things get way out of hand very quickly.  Danny is screaming she hates them, Deuce and Cage are throwing punches.  Danny tries to use sex as a weapon against ZZ and ends up in the shower.  From here time files...7 months pass...

Cox goes to California to see Ripper.  He's been living in his parents house, dating a girl to fill the void, and working as a mechanic.  He's shaved all his long hair off and he's living...or surviving.  Cox is there to bring Ripper home for Deuce and Eva's wedding.  He tells Ripper about Danny and ZZ getting together and how she's his old lady.  He got what he wanted which was for her to move on but he's angry about it.  It's only been a year and he thinks she lied about loving him.  He goes home for the wedding.  Danny is with ZZ but it's not enough.  She still secretly loves Ripper and wants him.  She loves ZZ like a brother and sleeps with him because it makes her numb.  She pictures Ripper every time she's with him.  Ripper gets to the club and finds her in his shower.  They end up having rough angry sex in the shower.  It's more like fighting than anything.  When it's over they fight more.  She screams about him leaving and then tells him about the baby.  He's angry and hurt.  He would have come home had he known.  As soon as the wedding is over he takes off again.

I lost something that day, a piece of me that's still out there, standing in that parking lot, staring after the man I loved.

2 years later...

Life goes on, her relationship with ZZ continues, Deuce and Eva are happily married and adore each other, Ripper stops in every once in awhile and stays for a day or two and takes off again.  Then at that summer barbecue everything goes wrong.  Ripper screams for her when ZZ proposes but no one hears him because at that exact moment Dorothy (one of the other member's, Jase's girlfriend) is his wife.  She pregnant and she shots her in the head.  Standing in the aftermath she remember him calling her name and demands to know what he was going to do.  He tells her he can't do it anymore, he can't live without her.  He doesn't care what happens at this point.  As long as he can be with her it will be worth it.  He drags her off in front of several people including Eva to reclaim her but she can't do it.  He just holds her while she cries.

He would give it all up for her.  For his woman.  Because she sure as s*** was his, and he'd go to hell and back ten times over before he lost her forever.

Deuce finds out about their relationship at the exact same time ZZ does when Cami calls Danny's phone and they all hear it from Ripper's room.  Deuce is holding on to ZZ when Ripper opens the door with Danny wrapped in a sheet.  ZZ is beyond furious and Deuce is barely holding it together.  None of that matters though because at that exact moment Jase shows up with a gun and ends up on his knees with the gun to his head.  He's about to kill himself because of what happened to his girlfriend.  They manage to get the gun from him but Deuce has had all he can handle.  He ends up sliding down the wall in the hallway and calling Eva telling her he needs her and she comes to him without hesitation.

Danny realizes that she wants to be with Ripper and she knows he's not leaving again.  Before she gets the chance to tell him she's kidnapped by a woman angry at Deuce for killing her brother.  Ripper finds her, the woman makes him get on his knees and beg for her life which he does.  While all of this is going on Deuce is sneaking up on them and he's there before anyone realizes it.  Danny is safe and I won't even go into what the club does to the woman.

The epilogue takes place awhile later.  She's 9 months pregnant and Ripper married her less than a month after the kidnapping with Deuce's begrudged blessing.

This book was an easy 5 Stars.  It wasn't as good as Undeniable but it wasn't far behind it.  I love this series and can't wait to read the others.  This book will stick with me for a long time just like the entire series will.  It captures you and refuses to let you go.  You feel things with these books.  You feel every last emotion the characters are feeling.  This is a great book.  You can read it as a stand alone but I wouldn't recommend it because of the story line with Deuce and Eva and also because of what happened with Ripper in book one.  So if you haven't read Undeniable then read it first and then come back and read this one!  It's a must read!

My Ripper / Danny

Favorite Quotes:

He wanted her on the back of his bike.  Yeah, he wanted to lay claim to Danielle West, ink his name on her body and slap an old lady patch on her a**.  And worse, he wanted the world to know it.
It was at that precise moment that Ripper knew his world had shattered for a third time, had crumbled and turned to dust at his feet.
Nothing from here on out would ever again be the same.

Yeah, f***ing right, he thought, dragging Eva up the steps.  Eva was his.  All his.  Ain't no man, not even her father, should be thinking otherwise. (Deuce's inner monologue at his wedding)
