A Holiday Break

Hello Everyone!

I just wanted to take a minute and tell everyone Thank You!  You have made my first year as a blogger amazing!  It is such a blessing to be able to do this and the response has been amazing.  I have many things planned next year to take my blog to the next level and I will be so excited to share these things with you.

Because the holidays are fast approaching I do have a small announcement.  Because of Thanksgiving (and the day after), Christmas, and so many birthdays from this point until the first of the year I'm gonna be extremely busy.  Being a mom to two elementary school boys also requires Christmas programs, teacher's gift, dozens of cookies and treats baked, Christmas parades, etc.  Then you throw in Christmas shopping...there just aren't enough hours in the day!  As much as I enjoy blogging I will be spending the holidays with my family.

What does this mean for my blog?  Well, I won't be writing anymore reviews until January.  Honestly it will probably take from now until January to read a single book lol.  I'll be back as soon as my kids return to school.  I hope everyone has a very safe and happy holidays!

**With love,
Rachel

Tell Me Why by Sydney Snow (Lacey Wetherford)

Tell Me Why** 5 out of 5 Stars **

**WARNING:  SPOILERS

Anna Vasquez has had enough.  Torn after finding out her best friend committed suicide, she's determined to find out why this horrible thing has happened.  But when she falls for her best friend's brother, Caleb, she learns a terrible secret.  Suddenly she's left with questions and wondering if love really can conquer all.

MY REVIEW...

I almost didn't buy this book.  It was one of those books I went back and forth over since I had already reached my spending limit for books this month. (My husband seems to think he has me and my limit under control...right, he'd actually have to take my card away for that!)  So I bought it and I'm glad I did.  From the first sentence I was hooked.  The prologue was horrible but not in the way your thinking.  I was floored, crushed and devastated for Anna within minutes.  This book took me on a roller coaster of emotions.  It was smooth sailing for awhile then the bottom fell out from under me and I'm still reeling from the twist this book took.  The writing style was excellent and it's written in dual POV.  I loved the H/h and some of the secondary characters.  It was suspenseful, drama packed, heartbreaking, emotional, with a great love story to boot.  If you haven't already put this book on your TBR list I suggest you do it now.

Things I loved...

  1. The relationship between Anna and Caleb...even when they weren't together
  2. The loyalty to her best friend...even though she's gone.
  3. The plot twist...I never say that but this one was a doosey.  If it can make me go "WTH" then it's something.
  4. The ending
Things I hated...
  1. The plot twist (lol)...I hated what the suicide note did to him
  2. Caleb's father...what an a**hat!
I'm giving this book 5 stars because it's amazing.  You have everything within those pages that a good book should have and it will stay with you after you've finished.

BOOK SUMMARY...

Anna is a beautiful girl with long dark hair and dark eyes.  She's 18 about to graduate high school, and high on life.  She is the lead singer in a band with her best friend Jessi's step brother Caleb.  She's been in love with Caleb for years but he's shone no reason to believe he feels the same.

Caleb is the protector.  He's always looked out for Jessi and Anna.  He considers Anna one of his best friends.  He has longish, shaggy black hair and blue eyes.  He's 21.  He's the lead guitarist in his band.  He's been in love with Anna for awhile but she's his step sister's best friend, and he feels like she's a little to young for him so he suffers in silence.

The book begins in tragedy.  Anna finds her best friend Jessi after she's committed suicide.  Caleb and his mother are also there.  Everyone is devastated.  Caleb and Anna are close and he tries to comfort her throughout the entire situation and at the funeral.  She doesn't understand why Jessi would do it.  Caleb has his own grief to deal with as well.

After the funeral, Caleb finds Jessi's suicide note in his lyric book.  She explains why she did it and he's overcome with guilt believing he's to blame...and in a way he is.  As his penance he has to bare this secret alone.  He knows that if he tells Anna what happened he will loose her completely.  Even though they aren't together he's still in love with her and he'll take what he can get just to be near her.  So he begins his journey of torment by lying to the woman he loves to protect her and to keep from losing her.

He puts distance between them and she can't stand it.  She's suffering and feels like she's lost them both.  They spend an evening together talking and she tells him she can't loose him.  He lets her know that loosing him isn't an option.  Before he tells her what he's feeling he leaves.  She chases after him and he kisses her.  It's not a light one, it's hungry and desperate.  He kisses her as if she's the air he breaths.  After the kiss he apologizes to her and tells her he lost control and it will never happen again.  He leaves her standing there alone and confused.

He puts more distance between them.  He's drinking a lot, trying to deal with the pain from Jessi and from what he's feeling for Anna.  It's getting harder and harder to ignore what he's feeling.  His band mate tells him he's going to ask Anna out and that causes him to go off.  The guy wasn't serious though, he just wanted him to admit he loved her.  Everyone knows they are crazy about each other.  She comes over to talk to him and they end up on his bed kissing.  He finally gives into what he's feeling and they officially become a couple.   From here things move pretty fast.  I love you's come quickly, things are great between them, he wants her to move in with him after she graduates and eventually asks her to do so in which she agrees.  Things are fine up until the night of her graduation.

Graduation night is the night.  They've waited to have sex until his test results came back.  He's made it as romantic as possible.  He's as excited and nervous as she is.  He wants nothing more than to make her his in every way that counts.  She goes to borrow a t shirt from him while he's cooking.  Inside that drawer she finds the suicide note and it changes everything in an instant.  I didn't see this coming.  I thought of every possible reason Jessi would commit suicide but this wasn't on that list.  I was floored and dumbfounded.  Never in a million years did I see it coming.

**HUGE SPOILER AHEAD...READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!**

Inside that suicide note...
Jessi was running away from her mom and step dad fighting.  Something needed to be known is that Caleb is only Jessi's step brother--his father, her mother.  She did what she always does and went to Caleb's apartment.  He was passed out from drinking and she crawled into bed with him like she'd done a million times and went to sleep.  She woke up later on to him kissing her.  They ended up having sex.  He doesn't remember any of it but she knew what was happening since she was completely sober.  Jessi was also in love with Caleb.  She let it happen because she wanted it to.  She thought he'd finally felt something for her until he called out Anna's name in the middle of it.  She left before he woke up and he didn't remember so she never brought it up.  She ended up pregnant with Caleb's baby.  She knew he'd do the honorable thing and marry her even though he was in love with someone else.  She committed suicide to escape the situation.

This is what I was feeling after reading that letter...

Anna confronts him about it and does exactly what I would have done...she ran like hell!  When I say ran I mean ran.  She left him with him begging to let him explain.  She went home to her parents, changed her college plans and boards a plane for California.  She left the state to get away from him.  She's devastated...this was her best friend and the love of her life after all.  She doesn't tell him she's leaving and he finds out from her mother.  Devastated is an understatement.  I felt so sorry for this guy.  He's committed an act that he doesn't remember.  He's lost his "sister" and his baby then in the time it takes to blink he went from planning their life together with Anna to having absolutely nothing.

She's living in California trying to move on, he's doing the same but hoping she'll come back...more like waiting.  He ends up getting into a fight with his dad over his step mom and his dad shoots him in the head.  It only grazes him but it was close.  She doesn't even call him when she finds out, just sends him a text message.  He tells her he'll be waiting when she decides if she can forgive him or not.

I lost some respect for her here.  I understand why she left but dang!  A month passes and they haven't spoken.  She's been hanging out with her roommate and her boyfriend and his best friend.  She's asked out on a date and she refuses at first but then finally accepts.  (REALLY??!!!)  The guy kisses her and she feels absolutely nothing.  It's then that she realizes that Caleb is the only one for her and she has the guy take her home.  She makes a decision, calls her mom and is coming home after the semester is over.   Meanwhile, the band has gotten to opportunity to record for a record company...in California.  He goes to her mother to get her address.  He's had enough, he's given her enough time, he wants his girlfriend back.  Her mother tells him what Anna has decided but he heads to California with his band.  He has no intention of waiting on her to come home.  He's going to her.

She opens the door to him and lets him in.  He explains everything and she eventually forgives him completely.  He spends the night and they finally make love to each other.  It's sweet and passionate.  They spend the rest of the night and most of the morning making up for lost time.  He takes her with him to his meeting and she's still a member of the band.

The epilogue occurs some time later.  They are one of the hottest bands out there.  He proposes to her on stage one night at a show and she accepts.

Unforgiven by Elizabeth Finn

Unforgiven** 4 out of 5 Stars **

**WARNING:  SPOILERS AHEAD**

A mistake made long ago...
Pain buried so deep...

When Bailey Trent returns home to her small little Ozark mountain town after being away for nearly six years, she knows she'll face the ghosts of her past.  It does not mean she's prepared to come face to face with the cruelest of those memories.

Darren Cory's life is a shell of what it once was, and when he's forced to endure the cause of his agony, hatred abounds quickly.  But hating Bailey destroys him too.

Can Darren find a way to move past the pain and forgive the woman he once cared so much for before his anger consumes them both?  Or will he drag them into the hell of an unforgiven past?

MY REVIEW...

What to say, what to say??  There were part of this book that I loved and then there were parts that I absolutely hated.  As far as the writing style and things of that nature go...it was perfect.  The book is written in dual POV so I really enjoyed getting both versions of how they were feeling.  It was easy to read but a bit long.  Part of the book is present day while other parts are past events leading up until the day she steps foot back in town.  You understand right away that Darren and Bailey had something intense once.  It was so intense no one else existed when they were in the room together.  But before anything could come of it something terrible happened that destroyed their relationship and any future they may have built.  I wanna say I saw what had happened coming.  There aren't many things that can make a person hate you once they love you.  I felt for Darren, I really did.  It was obvious that he was hurting and that he placed full blame on her.  At times I bought into the things he said, I really felt he hated her.  With that being said, one of the things I hated was the way he spoke to her.  I don't care how much you dislike someone, you have no right to say those sort of things about a person.  I had a hard time liking the guy honestly.  But even with all the hatred he spewed I've always heard, "The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference."  That man wasn't indifferent about Bailey at all.  Bailey has been through a lot.  She blames herself and she can't get past what she's done.  Life is hard for her and he definitely isn't going to make it easy on her.  This story is tragic and it will take your emotions on an intense ride.

Things I loved...

  1. Darren...from about 70% through the end.  He goes from being horrible to perfect in no time.
  2. Michelle-She's Bailey's best friend.  She stands up for her against Darren and the entire town
  3. Bailey's strength
  4. The ending!
Things I hated...
  1. Darren until about 70%
  2. The amount of time it took him to open his dang eyes and see what he had
  3. The hot and cold of both characters
All in all this book is worth reading.  I enjoyed it.  Even though I had trouble liking Darren he does redeem himself and then I started to fall for him.  I give it 4 stars.  4 because I just didn't like Darren up until the end.  I also am not a fan of a book that has flashbacks.  I'm invested in the present story so I tend to just skim flashbacks.  That's just a personal preference so check this book out for yourself.  It's worth it!

BOOK SUMMARY...

To save your eyes from reading and my fingers from typing I'm just gonna cut to the heart of the matter.  There are a few things you need to know if you're looking for spoilers.
  1. Bailey has been away for 6 years because she's been in prison serving a sentence for vehicular homicide.
  2. The person she killed was riding with her.  Her name was Jesse and they had left a party after they both had been drinking.  Jesse was Bailey's best friend and she was also Darren's sister.  Darren was on the phone with Jesse when the wreck happened.
  3. He absolutely hates her but can't be away from her either.  He's torn, confused and he lashes out as a result.
Ok so Darren and Bailey come face to face for the first time in 6 years when she comes into the ER needing stitches.  He's the attending doctor.  He isn't nice to her, he's not gentle and he likes seeing her in pain.  He's rough with her and she leaves trying to get away before she cries.  He sees her the following day at the vets office while picking up his dog.  He informs the woman she works for that she's a felon and it cost her her job.  Like I said, he is far from nice to her and he wants to see her suffer.  I found myself thinking, "Ok geez, I get it, you hate her.  Leave her alone already."  Something that apparently never occured to him is the fact that it could just as easily have been his sister driving.  Instead of living without his sister he could be living without the woman he loved.

He shows up at her door a few days later and they end up sitting on the floor.  What he does to her is just mean.  Things get heated and then they get heated in the sexual sense.  He's almost forceful but eventually leaves her sitting in the floor and leaves.  He doesn't understand why he can't stay away from her.  He tells her before leaving that night that he can't be around her anymore and that he's leaving the hospital and then town.  She tells him to stay and makes plans to move to Memphis with her mother.  He hates this.  His problem is that he's not really over her and truth be told doesn't really want to be.  This is the part he can't handle.  He shows up her house a week later and tells her to stay.  He needs to work through this and he can't do it without her there.  We find out later that another reason is that if he left he would always be able to find her but if she leaves he'll loose her and forever is a long time to spend without someone you love.

She ends up house sitting and puppy sitting for him while he works.  He pays her to do this.  Things are strained in the beginning.  They occasionally run a trail close to his house together.  They speak without screaming.  He is still extremely hot and cold with her.  At times he is almost like the man who hadn't lost his sister but others I was pretty sure he wanted her far away.  After a public fight where for lack of a better word he was being an ass, she leaves him sitting at the table and avoids him for days.  Darren doesn't like being avoided...especially by Bailey.  He comes home unannounced late one night and things happen.  They don't sleep together but the scene is steamy.  Things don't end well which leads to avoidance again.  When they finally come face to face again, he pretty much throws the fact that he has a date in her face without actually meaning to.  The thought of hurting her is becoming revolting to him now.  She comes in the next morning to find a destroyed bed.  Tears lead to anger which leads to a fight.  He tells her he hates her and she tells him they have something in common.  She's giving up on forgiveness and going for full time avoidance.

Days pass, he's miserable without her but confused about why.  He finds her but his previous date shows up.  There we learn that he didn't have sex with the woman, his bed was destroyed because he couldn't sleep.  He tells the woman he's not interested right in front of Bailey.  They talk and he asks her to go home with him.  She agrees.  Things happen but they don't sleep together because he can't go there yet.  Even at this point you could tell he was changing.  The lines between love and hate are becoming crossed and he knows it.  A few weeks pass and things get better but he's still mean to her.  It's not so much hatred now as confusion about what he's feeling.

She's injured while running and after panicking he's the one who finds her.  After taking her to the hospital and bringing her home to rest things go downhill fast.  He's questioned by his mother and he goes on the defensive.  He says things that aren't kind.  Seriously, if it had been me, that's one man who would have been finding his way off the floor and I'd probably be going to jail...just sayin'.  He talks about taking advantage of her and dragging her through hell with him.  He calls her a "poor little murderer" and worthless.  These things can't be taken back.  After his mom leaves, Michelle shows up and he realizes that Bailey wasn't asleep.  He realizes the damage that has been when he sees her.  He also realizes that he was lashing out and he doesn't feel any of those things about her anymore...not even a little bit.  She leaves his house and he lets her go.

"You will always be my world."

He might not be able to quiet the past enough to put it away yet, but he'd learned not to hate her.  How could he ever have?  She was his Bailey.

She decides to move to Memphis with her mother and they don't speak for the week before she leaves.  She writes him a letter which messes him up pretty good.  He now sees that he no longer hates her and he's not sure if he ever really did to begin with.  He shows up at her door the night before she leaves and they end up spending the night together and they finally have sex for the first time.  It's hot and intense.  He leaves her that night.  He doesn't ask her to stay and he knows that even though he loves her and he's willing to admit it he has to let her go.  He sees that he's the problem not her and he's not willing to drag her down with him so he walks away even though it almost kills him.

6 weeks pass and other than a message on her birthday they don't hear from each other.  He's living in hell without her, literally on autopilot.  She's not doing much better either.  In a twist that I didn't see coming, her mother is killed in a car accident.  She's alone and doesn't know what to do.  Darren hears about it but not from her.  He takes off to be with her and finds her at the hospital.  He wants to be her support since his sister's death was harder on him because he didn't have her.  He pays for the cost of the funeral and to have her moved back to their hometown.  He takes her home to his house and takes care of her.  This is where he became perfect.  He held her for hours without saying a word, made baths for her, feed her, held her when she cries, slept cuddled up to her.  He was her rock.  He is going to be there for her through everything...and so is his mother.

He has decided at this point that he wants her.  Not just in town but in his home.  He loves her.  A week or so later she has to make a decision about where she's going to live.  Her PO is coming to see her.  Darren asks her to stay with him.  She needs to know if he has forgiven her and when he can't answer she knows she can't stay without it.  She moves ahead with her plans to move back to Memphis.  After talking to his mother he realizes that he's already forgiven her.  He doesn't feel anger, resentment, nothing.  He just loves her and wants to be with her.

Finally getting his head on straight, he goes after her and tells her exactly what he's feeling.  He tells her he loves her and always has and he tells her that he has forgiven her.  Then he begs her to stay with him.  She agrees.

The epilogue happens 2 years later.  It's the night before the wedding.  They have found peace and happiness.  They go to therapy together and they are finally back to who they were before the night that changed their plans.  He proposed a year after they had been together in the same spot he forgave her.

Wake Up Call by Victoria Ashley

Wake Up Call** 4 out of 5 Stars **

**WARNING:  SPOILERS AHEAD**

Avery Hale had spent her whole childhood abused by her drunken, hopped-up parents.  Broken from a lifetime of hate and pain she grew up realizing that trust and love just didn't exist.  Not in her world at least.  After turning the age of eighteen, she packed up and moved far away determined to escape her hurtful past and start a new life.  Once on her own she comes to the conclusion that the emptiness still exist.  Doing what she had to to survive she found herself mixed up in exotic dancing and meaningless sexual relationships unable to feel anything, for anyone.  She was sure that her life was worthless and there was nothing left for her.  On the other hand, so she thought.

After meeting a beautiful stranger, Jace, her life suddenly is turned upside down.  Everything that she truly believed suddenly gets questioned and then she is left to figure out if there is really more to her than she could ever have imagined.  Jace having some secrets of his own puts the pain of his own past behind to do what he can to help Avery.  Can the love of another broken person be enough to help Avery, or is she already too far gone?

Avery's life is pulled in many directions as she tries to find herself, and not everyone and thing is what they seem to be in this story of love, trust and opening up.  Finding herself and learning to love herself might just be the hardest thing she's ever had to do.

MY REVIEW...

Wake Up Call is a great book about overcoming abuse and learning to love yourself again.  The heroine has gone through some major issues as a child and the battle to find herself  has never been harder.  She's on rock bottom with no way up when Jace finds her.  He became that light in the darkness she needed to pull herself back up again.  I loved Jace.  He was everything I love in a hero.  He was sweet, thoughtful, caring and patients...he also had tattoos and a lip piercing ;)  As for Avery...honestly I felt her struggle but she got on my nerves for 90% of the book.  She just couldn't see what was right in front of her and it drove me crazy.  I mean seriously...how many times can you push someone away before they stop coming back?  I just wanted to slap her.  The book is written in from Avery's prospective.  It's easy to follow, has a ton of drama (thanks to Avery) and it wasn't too long.  Over all I enjoyed it.  Even though I did have some issues with parts of it, I still didn't want to put it down.

Things I liked...

  1. The ending...So sweet!
  2. Jace...PERFECT MAN!!
Things I didn't...
  1. Avery...too much whining, running and pushing people away
  2. The book tended to go in circles at time.
I'm giving this book 4 stars.  I took one star away because when it comes down to it I just didn't like Avery and I'm pretty sure nothing would change that.  I like my heroines strong and passionate.  I just didn't get that with her.  Check this one out if you're looking for a quick read with the perfect man who's willing to do what he has to for the woman he's falling in love with.

BOOK SUMMARY...

Avery is a woman who is down on her luck.  Life just hasn't been good to her.  She's working as a stripper just to survive, living in a horrid little apartment, running from her parents, and just trying not to give up.  She's pretty with emerald green eyes and long black hair.

Jace is the perfect man.  He's got bad boy looks, tattoos, a lip ring.  He's tall, dark and handsome with jet black hair.  He owns a diner.  He's also sweet, honest, compassionate, considerate, and has the heart of a saint.  He loves Avery and he's willing to do what's needed to prove she can trust him.

The book begins with her having a nightmare of the abuse she encountered at the hands of her father as a child.  Her father liked to drink and he was violent.  He repeatedly beat her and her mother.  Her mother loved the man inspite of what he did and didn't try to protect her daughter.  She has a lot of resentment and hate because of it.  She took off a year ago and has been trying to survive on her own.

She works in a seedy strip club.  She gets to work one night and see Jace leaning against the bar.  She doesn't talk to him until the following morning when she happens into his diner for breakfast.  From that point on he makes it his mission to protect her.  Within no time he's got her moving into his house renting his spare room, he gets her out of the club and gives her a job in his diner.  She has a hard time believing he doesn't want anything from her besides helping her start over.

It doesn't take long for both to start feeling things for each other.  After they fall asleep on the couch wrapped in each other's arms things become tense.  They try to make each other nervous.  He brings a girl home that he's not even a little bit into.  She brings a guy named Caleb home who she's been sleeping with for almost a year.  This guy is no good but he does have feelings for her.  After they pretty much race each other to the bedroom with their dates things don't go well.  They end up in a heated kiss in the bathroom while the others wait for them.  She sends Caleb on his way and it's not long after Jace sends the girl on her way.

They talk it out a few days later and go on what looks to be a date.  She doesn't see it this way of course since she's dead set on admitting she's falling in love with him.  Things go hot and cold between them for awhile.  All the while she's getting stronger.

She receives a letter from her aunt telling her that her parents know where she is.  She does what she does best...she runs. (Yes, I'm still frustrated over here!) She packs her bags even after he tells her he can't let her go.  She goes to stay with Caleb which ends up being a disaster.  In the meantime she finds another job and an apartment.  Her father finds her thanks to Caleb and when he does it isn't good.  She runs from him locking herself in the bathroom and calls a friend of Jace's and tells him he's got to come get her.  Jace is the one who shows up.  He almost beats her dad to death and then takes her back home with him.  They end up having sex later that night.

Jace takes her to see her mother who has been badly beaten.  She's in the hospital and at first very happy to see Avery.  Then we find out that her father died.  He didn't die because of Jace but because of cancer he's had for 13 years.  Her mother blames her and kicks her out of the room.

He tells her he loves her but she has nothing to say back to him.  They argue and he leaves to cool off.  She realizes the minute he leaves that she's made a mistake and calls a taxi.  As she's looking for him she comes up on an accident.  Seeing that it's his car she runs to the scene.  The cops tell her that no one survived the accident and she looses it.  She collapses and then wakes up in the hospital devastated at what she's lost.  Right before she falls asleep she opens her eyes to see Jace leaning over her.  He was stuck in traffic on his way home because of the accident.  He saw her being put in the ambulance and has been with her the entire time.  She tells him she loves him but he thinks it's the drugs talking.

Once he brings her home she tells him that she has an apartment and she's moving out.  He is upset at first but realizes that she needs to do this.  They are going to be together regardless of where she lives.  He takes her shopping for furniture and they continue their relationship living in separate places.

The epilogue takes place 6 years later.  They are married and have a little girl.  Things are better with her mother.  They are happily married and things are perfect.

Beneath the Surface by M.A. Stacie

Beneath the Surface‏ (Reluctance, #1)** 4 out of 5 Stars **

**WARNING:  SPOILERS AHEAD**

Kyran Reese is a man in control.  Driven when it comes to work, focused when it comes to play.  From his office to the chalk circle of the bare-knuckle boxing ring, his only thought is to win.  That thirst heightens when Dale Porter enters his life.  His brother's assistant should be off limits, but her witty comments and sarcastic comebacks have him desperate to get her between the sheets.

When Dale agrees to Kyran's relationship stipulation of no labels she's sucked into a whirlwind of lust, money, and underground boxing.  Dale fights her growing affection, trying to hide it when the world around them spirals out of control.  All too soon she realizes she can't hide her true feelings any longer.

Has Kyran finally met his match?  Could playing to win mean playing for keeps?

MY REVIEW...

What can I say?  I'm a sucker for a fighter with tattoos.  From Travis to Remy...and everyone in between.  It doesn't matter to me.  I flock to these books as if they personally call to me.  I LOVE them!  Beneath the Surface was no different.  The book is written in dual POV which was an added bonus.  The plot was enjoyable and honestly, I just couldn't put it down.  I read until 90% last night and couldn't hold my eyes open anymore so I finished it up this morning.  I loved both the heroine and the hero.  I did get frustrated with them at times.  It's one of those things where you just wanna scream at them to actually communicate instead of assuming they know what the other is thinking.

Kyran reminded me of a few other characters we know.  He had some Travis Maddox in him.  He had some Nate McKenna in him.  He had some Remington Tate him.  And finally I saw some Christian Grey in there too ;)  Dale was a strong heroine.  She stood up for what she felt and wouldn't back down.  I have to give her some credit for that seeing as how dominating Kyran could be.  I loved them both instantly and couldn't wait to see how their story played out.

Things I loved:

  1. Kyran's intensity
  2. Those tattoos!
  3. The ending...just PERFECT
  4. Dale standing her ground at all times!
Things I didn't like:
  1. Her name...got them confused at times.  Two male names never works for me
  2. The amount of time it took for him to realize what he's feeling
  3. His brother and how it was handled.
I loved this book.  If you love fighters like I do then grab this one and read it.  It's worth it.  I'm giving it 4 out of 5 Stars because it did drag in places and I kept getting their names and faces confused.  Check it out!

BOOK SUMMARY...

Dale is pretty with dark curly hair, green eyes and she's tiny.  She's witty, sarcastic, and gives as much as she gets.  She's Kyran's bother's new assistant.

Kyran is a ruthless businessman by day and a fighter by night.  Fighting is his dirty little secret, an addiction he needs to relieve stress.  He has dark hair and tattoos.  He's dark and brooding and very possessive and dominate.  He has to have control in all things.

Kyran and Dale meet on her first day as his brother Taylor's new assistant.  His brother has a habit of not showing up to work so he has to handle the new employee stuff.  There is an instant attraction that's very powerful.  He tries to intimidate her but he figures out pretty quick that she's gonna give him as much as he gives her.  She's not afraid of him which is something different than he's accustomed too.

Days pass and the attraction eats at him.  She's all he can think about.  She's consuming him day and night.  He hates this and does everything in his power to forget her.  He's itching to be in a fight and he's needing some kind of serious release.  Things come to ahead in an elevator.  Before he realizes what he's doing he's got her pushed against the wall.  He realizes that she's not fighting him.  He backs off her and goes all cold on her again.

Needing that release he schedules a fight.  Thinking the distraction is what will fix him he's surprised to learn that she's at the club.  Her brother is a bartender there.  He ends up yelling at her and then getting sucker punched and knocked up.  This leads to her being worried and driving him home.  She spends the night to check on him and the next morning a friendship starts to emerge.  A very sexually charged friendship.  You could feel it in the pages as you read.  He's bound to snap and when he does everyone is going up with him.

Another week passes and they end up in a boardroom together alone.  Things get out of hand.  What starts as a scorching kisses ends with her on the table with him.  I have to say, the sex was rough and dirty and so so hot!  They end up messing around in the shower after a fight the next night.  They can't seem to get enough of each other.  This confuses him because he's not a relationship kind of guy.

They make an agreement.  They are going to have a "no labels" relationship which means it's just sex and nothing more.  It still blows my mind how characters think this will work but then I'm a reader so I know it's not going to.  So starts an intense and passionate no strings attached relationship.  The rules are simple.  Work is work and everything else is fair game.

It's not long before they both begin to realize things are changing between them.  They go from sex at his apartment to playing on the beach and little touches and kisses wherever they can get them.  He's holding to his terms though.  Things continue like this for awhile.

Kyran's brother is always late for work, he comes in hungover if he bothers to come in at all.  Dale knows something isn't right with him but Kyran won't listen to her.  The man needs help.  Kyran has been taking care of him for years and he's very angry at him.  Things come to ahead when Dale finds him unconscience in the bathroom.  He's overdosed on cocaine.  He ends up in the hospital and after they fight, Kyran heads straight to Dale.  He doesn't realize or doesn't want to accept that he needs her.  They end up having sex and then she breaks the rules.  She tells him she loves him.  He doesn't react like she thought but it's still not good.  He doesn't want to end things with her, he can't walk away from her, but he doesn't feel the same.  She can't be with him if he can't because she needs more.  He leaves the apartment and walks away.

Kyran apparently doesn't know how to do a break up.  He's still calling and trying to get her to go to a function with him.  She stands her ground and refuses to be with him.  It's not easy on her though.  She goes to the club he fights at thinking he's not going to be there and gets drunk.  Naturally, he is there fighting.  He looses the fight.  He looks bad and he's fighting to numb the pain of not having her.  You would think this would be a wake up call for him.  She eventually agrees to go to the function with him.  It's a disaster and she walks away from him for a 2nd and final time.  A few days later she quits her job and leaves town to spend some time with her dad.

Kyran isn't handling the break up well.  He schedules a fight and lets the guy pound on him without fighting back.  Anything to not feel what he's been feeling.  After he's knocked unconscious and then wakes up to Dale's brother things start to fall into place.  They talk and he realizes what he's done.  His only thought is getting to her.  He shows up at her door soaking wet begging her to let him in.  He finally tells her how he feels and that he's in love with her.  She forgives him and things go back to the way they should be.  She's been receiving these weird cards in the mail with nothing on them.  Turns out they are labels he's been sending her (???) and he places another one in front of her that says, "WILL YOU MARRY ME?".  She says yes.

"I was falling in love with you.  Hook.  Line. And f***ing sinker.  You took the ground from under my feet and left me with nothing to cling to but you."

The epilogue takes place 6 months later and he's running late for his own wedding.  Right before they walk down the isle together he hands her another label that says, "MRS. REESE", and then she hands him his own label that says, "DADDY".

Broken Fences by Kelly Gendron

Broken Fences (TroubleMaker, #1)** 4.5 out of 5 Stars **

**WARNING:  SPOILERS AHEAD**

Colden Saint James, Dusty Owens, and a single night of passion had equaled to poor old Mr. McAllister's broken fence.  Add six years, a troublemaking photo, and there's not a fence in Texas that's gonna be safe...

It took Dusty Owens two years to land Colden "Saint" James, even if it was for only one night, but the very next day, he was gone.  Now, years later, the "Saint" has returned, but he's no longer the do-gooder rookie cop Dusty Remembers.

Dusty Owens always had a way of making every single one of Colden's man parts go all hard.  He'd been so close to falling for the girl before he'd left Odessa.  Now, due to a troublemaking photo, Colden must return to his hometown to keep her safe.  Trouble is, he's a different man--not to mention the change.  Well, it's gonna cause all kinds of problems where Dusty Owens and all of his man parts are concerned.

MY REVIEW...

You know it's gonna be a good book when the first line has you thinking "What the ..."!

The loud squeal may have jilted her heart, but it was the flying pig that stopped Dusty Owens dead in her tracks...

Yeah, I was hooked...and laughing hysterically.  Broken Fences was an awesome book and I enjoyed every minute of it.  I grabbed me from page one and I was hooked from that point on.  I read late into last night and finished up this morning.  You have a heroine who's smart, funny, and takes no prisoners where anyone is concerned...especially Colden.  You have a hero who has been in love with the same girl for years regardless of the distance and years spent away from each other.  He's just ruthless enough that he'll do what he has to in making her swing his way.  These two were made for each other but circumstances outside of their control tore them apart before they even had a chance to really get started.  The sexual chemistry between these two is off the charts.  I was fanning myself at times!  The book is written in dual POV so we get both sides of their story.  At times I wanted to throw my Kindle because all he had to do was tell her how he felt.  I wanted to shake her at times too because she's to dang stubborn for her own good.  I loved the ending even though it left a lot to be desired.  I felt like it just ended and I didn't get to see what happened.  I was happy with it though.

Things I loved:

  1. The humor and banter between Colden and Dusty
  2. The pace and excitement in the book
  3. The quotes
  4. The ending...to a point
I'm giving Broken Fences 4.5 stars because it's a great book and a quick read that leaves you feeling happy with a smile on your face.  If you're looking for something quick with enough excitement and drama to keep you entertained and drawn in then take a chance on this baby...it's worth it!

BOOK SUMMARY...

Dusty is pretty.  We don't get a great description but you can tell from the way Colden talks about her.  She owns a bar and works hard.  She's smart, witty, sassy and a complete smarta**.  She's got no problem letting someone know how she feels.  Her only regret is Colden.  He's the guy she fell in love with and lost the day after he took her innocence.

Colden is a 30 year old undercover cop working with the FBI to bring down a gun smuggler.  He has green eyes, a sexy smile, and tattoos everywhere.  He's a lot different than the young man who left home 6 years before.  His life has made him into a man and a strong and alpha male at that.  Now he's cocky and has no problem asking and then taking what he wants.  He's overly protective to the point of being possessive when it comes to Dusty.  He always has been but it's worse than ever.  He's been in love with Dusty for years.  He's also dominate and controlling in all things including the bedroom.

First a little history...

Dusty chased after Colden for 2 years and after one night of making him insanely jealous he gave into what he always felt for her.  His life, her life, her virginity and a fence would never be the same.  She'd finally gotten the man she wanted only to find out he was gone the next day.  He was called away on assignment never thinking it would be 6 years before he made it back home.  She's crushed when he leaves but begins to move on when his brother tells her that he's married with 3 kids.

The book begins when she's confronting her cousin's fiance who happens to be Colden's younger brother.  Someone tells her to take it easy on him and when she turns around she comes face to face with the man who left her behind.  They somehow end up making a bet based on who can ride the mechanical bull the longest.  If he wins she has to grant him one wish.  He does end up winning but doesn't make his request known in the beginning.  These two have insane chemistry and he's not even trying to hide it.  He wants her and much to her dismay she wants him just as bad.

He's shows up at her door at 2 am to claim his wish.  He tells her he's in town for two weeks for his brother's wedding and while there he will be staying with her.  I laughed at this because this guy has no problem just barging into her life.  We find out that he's really in town to protect her and has been for 4 days.  His cover has been blown with his assignment and because he broke protocol and carried a picture of the two of them around in his wallet, she's in danger.  The picture comes up missing.  He did this because he couldn't let her go.  She's been his since the day he laid eyes on her but she doesn't know it.  He also finds out that she thinks he's married and she feels safe because he won't overstep because of his wife.

He's not married and he doesn't tell her this until the next morning when he has her trapped on the counter between his legs.  Things get out of hand and they almost have sex on the table before he realizes what he's doing and backs off.  He doesn't take kindly to her vendors at the bar hugging her either.  His thoughts had me rolling.  He's all "who does this guy think he is that he can touch what's mine."  She hasn't figured out that he never wanted to leave her and that he's as much in love with her now as he was then.

Things get out of hand again between them in an opera house.  She pretty much comes undone with him on the stairwell.  Once they arrive back at her house for what promises to be an interesting night she finds her door unlocked.  It doesn't take her long to realize that Colden isn't exactly what he says he is.  There's a guy in her house that's there to kill them both but Colden handles the situation.  In the process of doing so he scares her to death and her only thought is trying to get away from him.  He ends up having to shoot out her tire as she escapes.  This is after she's made him tie himself up while pointing his own gun at him.

He pretty much kidnaps her and goes on the run for a few days.  She's terrified of him and tries to get away but he's not having it.  They end up holed up in a no tell motel a few hours away from home.  The first night he realizes that she's not scared of the situation but of him and he can't take it.  He tells her to be scared of what he feels for her but no him.  They spend a few days in the motel where they of course end up having explosive sex that has been building between them since he walked back into town.  Even with the sex she knows she can't have him.  As he takes her home he decides he's going to tell her exactly how he feels about her.  He has to check in with his boss first but promises to return in a couple of hours.  Plans change and he ends up on a plane headed back to where he came from.  She's devastated that's he left her again.

He's not gone long and when he returns he goes straight to her.  She angry but they end up having sex on the pool table in her bar.  These two really can't keep their hands off each other.  She's angry the next day as they attend the wedding but he can't really talk to her.  He tries on the dance floor but she ends up walking away from him.  After the reception they end up having more sex on her desk and then she breaks down and cries while he holds her.  She is hurting because she realizes that she's in love with him and he's leaving the next day.  He doesn't know what's going on and instead of making her tell him he just drives her home and tells her he's not going anywhere anytime soon and they will talk the next day.

The following morning she has to give her statement to his boss and while they are talking the picture Colden carried in his wallet falls to the floor.  She gets a good look at it and the way he's looking at her in it before his boss explains about the photo.  When she arrives home he's working on a fence in her front yard...symbolic of fixing what he broke.  When she asks him about the picture he tells her it's a picture of him and his wife the first time they met.  Then he tells her he's in love with her and always has been and he's not going anywhere without her.

That's where it ends.  I liked the ending but I would have loved an epilogue a year or so down the road with them married and some babies or something.  It was still awesome though!
